Import-dependent: lead-acid SLI base plus lithium for EV assembly and export-manufacturing hubs (Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam).
Mostly foreign-owned plants — see the manufacturer directory for the global makers present.
ASEAN harmonisation in progress, national EV policies (Thailand, Indonesia nickel-based ambitions).

| Year | 2024–2026 (as sourced per figure) |
| Battery scope | Lead-acid + lithium-ion; scope stated per figure |
| Unit | US$ / yuan / TWh — stated per figure |
| Data source | IEA, customs/industry data, research estimates (see Sources) |
| Layer | Character |
|---|---|
| Lead-acid base | Motorcycle/automotive SLI replacement — the dominant volume |
| Lithium growth | Electric two-wheelers, EV assembly, storage |
| Supply position | Import-dependent; limited local cell production |
| Main import source | China (lead-acid and lithium) |
Specific regional figures vary widely by country and source; this page states the structure rather than a single point estimate, consistent with the methodology.
Motorcycles and scooters are the dominant transport mode across much of the region, and every one carries a small lead-acid battery — making two-wheeler SLI the quiet volume engine of the market. The same fleet is now the region's electric transition: e-scooters and e-motorcycles are switching to lithium, which is why the region's battery demand is shifting chemistry at the low-voltage end, not just in cars.
Local battery manufacturing is thin outside a few assembly operations, so the region imports most of its batteries — lead-acid and lithium alike — largely from China. That dependency makes the region a price-taker in battery trade and a natural export destination for Chinese producers, with limited local policy leverage to build domestic supply.
| Country | Battery position |
|---|---|
| Thailand | EV hub policy — vehicle assembly pulling cell imports |
| Indonesia | Nickel resources — the material end of the chain |
| Vietnam | Electronics manufacturing — device-battery demand |
The region's role splits between assembly demand (Thailand, Vietnam) and raw material (Indonesia) — cells mostly imported for now.
My position: Southeast Asia's battery story is the two-wheeler — the region's lead-acid volume lives in motorcycle SLI, and its lithium future starts with electric scooters, not cars — which makes it a different market from every other major region.
Supporting logic: Analysts who read the region through car-centric lenses miss where the volume is. The two-wheeler fleet is both the lead-acid base and the electrification front, and import dependency means Chinese supply sets the market. Understanding those two facts is understanding the region.
