Battery Market Intelligence · Data period 2023–2031 (varies by figure) · Last reviewed 2026-09-16
| Company | Chemistry | Note |
|---|---|---|
| LG Energy Solution | NMC (shifting to LFP) | Largest of the three; ~22% global EV share (2023 era) |
| Samsung SDI | NMC, prismatic | Premium EV + ESS |
| SK On | NMC (shifting to LFP) | Ford/Hyundai supply |
South Korea's lithium industry is a technology leader under cost attack. Chinese LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cells undercut the Korean trio's NMC cells on price, which is why the Korean government launched the K-Battery Development Strategy — coordinated policy support — and why all three firms are now accelerating their own LFP production, increasingly aimed at the energy-storage (AI data-center) boom rather than the cooling EV market.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Li-ion cell & battery market, 2025 | USD 8.67 bn | Ken Research |
| Li-ion output growth, 2023 | +32% YoY | Industry statistics |
| Triad global EV share (ex-China) | ~25% | Industry analysis |
"South Korea's battery market" is sized very differently depending on whether the figure counts domestic market value (USD 8.67 bn) or the global output of Korean-owned companies (far larger, given the overseas gigafactories). Both are correct for different questions. This page states which is which rather than mixing them. See the methodology.
The Korean trio's strategy is visible in its geography: domestic plants serve Asian demand, US plants chase the IRA's production credits and customer proximity, and European plants serve the EU's localisation push. The same three companies, three continents, one logic: build where the policy and the customers are (see the directory page).
Where I stand: South Korea is the clearest case of a battery superpower whose real exposure is not technology but cost — it leads in NMC quality and is being forced down-market into LFP by Chinese price competition.
Why: The K-Battery strategy and the trio's LFP pivot are the same signal read twice: leadership by technology alone does not survive a commodity-price fight, and the response is to compete where the demand (storage) is growing.
