Battery Market Intelligence · Data period 2024–2025 (varies by figure) · Last reviewed 2026-09-15
Reported by the China Lead-Acid Battery Industry Association, based on registered-enterprise statistics:
| Segment | 2024 volume | Note |
|---|---|---|
| E-bike batteries | ~167.7 GWh | Largest single segment in the Chinese lead-acid market |
| Automotive SLI batteries | ~107.0 GWh | 37 registered enterprises reported |
| Stationary / standby batteries | ~9.1 GWh | 11 stationary-battery manufacturers reported |
| Total shipments | 413 GWh | USD 37.7 bn turnover; +10.6% YoY |
Reported customs/industry data put China's lead-acid battery exports at roughly 78.4 million units with an export value of about USD 4.12 billion (2025). Export value is a small fraction of total turnover — most Chinese lead-acid output is consumed domestically, which is itself a signal of how much of the market is internal automotive and e-bike demand.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Global lead-acid market, 2025 | USD 50.9 bn | Fortune Business Insights |
| Asia-Pacific share, 2025 | 39.6% (USD 20.16 bn) | Fortune Business Insights |
| China market (2026 projected) | USD 11.9 bn | Fortune Business Insights |
"Lead-acid production" is not one number. Sources differ because they measure different things — GWh (energy shipped) versus units versus value, automotive-only versus all applications, and new versus recycled. The 413 GWh figure above is an energy-shipment measure across all segments including e-bike; the export figure is a unit-and-value measure. Do not mix the two scopes. See the methodology for how this site flags those differences.
Position: The lead-acid story is a volume-and-scale story, not a technology story — and the e-bike share of China's shipments is the clearest evidence of it.
Reasoning: A mature, commodity market with an e-bike battery as its largest single segment tells you everything about lead-acid economics: thin margins, large volumes, and a domestic market that dwarfs its exports.
